The village of Maury in the Roussillon region of France is historically known for fortified dessert wines. But in recent years, some of America’s most talented winemakers have been dabbling in making luscious, intense, dry wines made from 50-80 year old head-pruned vines. We'd like to introduce to you one of the smallest production wines we carry, this micro-consulting project in France celebrates a 90 case production old vine Grenache called L’Agent . This Grenache was vinified by Richard Case of Domaine de la Pertuisane and winemaker of the talented team assembled by Dave Phinney to oversee D66 and other special projects coming out of this great region just over the Spanish border. The fruit for L'Agent comes from the schist soils of the single vineyard "Josephine Vineyard"At the edge of town in the western hills of Maury. This unique vineyard is steeply terraced at 1200 feet, with 70-year-old vines producing extremely low yields of concentrated fruit. The nose is extremely unique, deep, rich and laden with aromas of plum and spice with a hint of flint from the schist soils, making it almost seem dense enough to be fortified – but don’t be fooled. It’s all in the unique style for which this winemaking team has become branded.
