Nidus is the vision and craft of Pablo del Nido, who has once again captured the generous character of Napa Valley’s Bordeaux varietals in an opulent yet balanced palate that absolutely over-delivers. Pablo’s winemaking path is a unique one for Napa, which is one of the many reasons that we are big supporters. Growing up in Mendoza, the most famous wine region in Argentina, Pablo remembers listening to his grandfather, 'el Tata', tell stories about winemaking. These stories embedded a deep sense of curiosity and wonder that would ultimately become the driving force behind his career in hospitality and wine. Once out of school, Pablo worked as a sommelier in Buenos Aires, and shortly after, moved to Puerto Rico with a hunger and drive to learn more about wines of the world. There, he worked for a prestigious distributor that allowed him access to some of the greatest wine from some of the greatest wine regions. Upon his first visit to the Napa Valley, Pablo knew right away that this would be where he would make his own wine, a creative endeavor that he had been dreaming about for years. When it came time to name his new endeavor, Pablo continued to return to his memories of his grandfather’s tales of winemaking. And then came the name – Nidus, which means “nest” in Latin. A nest is a place in which something is formed; a site of origin. And we think it encompasses the sentiment that started Pablo down this path perfectly. The 2018 vintage here in Napa Valley is being celebrated among winemakers and sommeliers alike as one about as close to perfection as it gets. The fruit for Pablo’s 2018 vintage comes from both Atlas Peak and Napa Valley vineyards, and each site was selected for its great intensity and balance. His meticulous blend is comprised of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Malbec, and 10% Petit Verdot. After 22 months in barrel, of which 50% was new French oak, the wine is then bottled neither fined nor filtered. The resulting wine has intense, brooding black fruit with elegant tannins and a concentrated mid-palate, full of richness and complexity. A very approachable wine that can be enjoyed now but worthy of cellaring for another 7 to 10 years. Enjoy with a grilled skirt steak or spicy carne asada tacos. 150 cases produced.
