Preface Red Blend Alexander Valley 2019

Preface, as the name implies, is an introduction. It is the Phillipe Melka-crafted estate-grown Bordeaux blend for well-under $100 coming from Skipstone in Alexander Valley. It is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon with careful additions of Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, aged for 19 months in primarily new French oak. Purposefully blended by selecting a few of the brightest and more-approachable barrels from each year, this second label is always a coveted sneak peek into the potential of its vintage. We were proud to introduce the inaugural 2016 Preface Proprietary Red in our Under The Radar Club back in '18 and have been waiting, mouths watering, for its return ever since. Benefiting from a warm 2019 growing season, these grapes were meticulously picked and are a shining example of thoughtful, generous winemaking. This 2019 Preface Proprietary Red exudes character upon opening, revealing a burst of ripe red fruit, framed by savory aromas. The bright palate is lush and full-bodied, culminating with silky grained tannins and a long, pleasing finish. It's a rare thing indeed to find such a delicious, affordable wine from a winemaker as exalted as Philippe Melka!
