The Rothschilds are perhaps the best-known of the great European wine families. Of the American wine families, the Mondavis are arguably the most famous. Together, in 1979, they created Opus One. The partners agreed to choose a name of Latin origin for the joint venture, allowing for easy recognition in both English and French. Baron Philippe Rothschild announced his choice, “Opus,” a musical expression denoting the first masterwork of a composer. Two days later, he proposed an additional word making it “Opus One,” and that is where this special wine’s history was born, continuing for decades as one of the finest partnerships in the wine world. Years later, we are honored to have an allocation for our clients as this wine truly epitomizes the grandeur evident in collectible wines. The best for good reason.
The 2019 Opus One has intense aromas of black plum, blueberry, black currant, and dried rose petals, accentuated by mineral undertones. Fine-grained tannins frame the creamy, satiny texture. The freshness and soft glow of acidity create a subtle tension with dark fruit flavors, savory herbs, espresso, and cocoa. The finish is lengthy and sublime.
