Inspiration for a new brand can come from many directions, but in our opinion, the best source of spark should come from a great vineyard. This was the path of creation for the two friends behind Acclivity, a debut brand that surprised us with an incredibly drinkable Cabernet Sauvignon for less than $50. Sound like an unlikely discovery? Let us tell you the story.

Eric Mercer and Kyle Kemp are two friends and wine nerds who fell into the industry because of their creative drive. They met in 2013 while working together at Madrona Manor in Healdsburg and quickly realized that they shared the same passion for wine of place rather than style. This was when Eric shared the news that made Kyle’s jaw drop to the floor – he had a family vineyard called Murphy Ranch with fruit available for the next harvest – BAM! The two men immediately put their heads together. They conceptualized a brand that would ultimately morph into Acclivity, meaning ‘upward slope’ and a nod to the steep learning curve ahead as well as the sharp slope of the hillside that is the primary defining characteristic of the vineyard.

Murphy Ranch was purchased by Eric’s late grandfather, Tim, in the late 1960s. The property boasts a breathtaking hillside along the west-facing slopes of the Mayacamas mountain range. At the time of purchase, the property was planted entirely to plum trees. By the late 1970s, Tim had converted most of the acreage to vineyards. This unique site challenges the vines to grow in thin, rocky soils that lend rich varietal character and natural acidity.

The 2019 Acclivity is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot and spent 20 months in French Oak, 76% of which was new. The wine displays a deep ruby hue and is brimming with aromas of ripe berries, black cherry, crushed violets, savory, freshly roasted coffee beans, dried herbs, and cooling menthol. The palate is energetic yet firm with fine-grain tannins, elderberry compote, blackberry, cocoa nibs, cola, and dried licorice root. A thrilling wine in its youth with a promising look towards the future! Only 165 cases produced.
