On the rolling, north-facing slopes of Montagne de Reims, just west of Reims, sits the Premier Cru village of Vrigny. Here, Pinot Meunier has long been more than a supporting player. At Lelarge-Pugeot, it’s the soul of the domaine.
This eighth-generation estate is still very much a family affair. It is guided by Dominique and Dominique, with their children shaping what comes next. Their vineyards cover just under nine hectares, spread across more than 40 parcels. These parcels lean into Meunier’s strengths: cooler exposures, living soils, and a farming philosophy that has been organic since 2014 and biodynamic (Demeter-certified) since 2017.
“Tradition” Brut Nature is where that philosophy comes into sharp focus. It is drawn from a patchwork of parcels around Vrigny, expressing the village’s varied terroir—chalky and clay soils, subtle site shifts. The blend is purposefully Meunier-dominant, with no dosage to soften its firm structure. Aromatics are delicate yet persistent: orchard blossom, citrus peel, faint savory notes. On the palate, expect precise flavors of citrus, white peach, and mineral salinity, carried by a fine, linear tension. This Champagne is quiet and energetic rather than boisterous, balancing vivid freshness with grounded depth. It feels like a calling card: not just an introduction to Lelarge-Pugeot, but a clear statement of purpose. In skilled hands, Meunier can and should step into a delicious lead role!
