$100 Napa Cabernet doesn’t usually come with this kind of pedigree. But then again, Castiel isn’t your typical estate.
For the past decade, Celia Welch has quietly crafted Castiel’s Howell Mountain wines into some of Napa’s most refined, cellar-worthy Cabernets. Her final vintage, 2022, marked the end of an era. And now, 2023 ushers in a thrilling new chapter under Maayan Koschitsky, the Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka’s Atelier Melka and a veteran of Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle.
This is Castiel’s first-ever Napa Valley bottling, a blend of 65% estate fruit from Howell Mountain and 35% from Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville. Just 175 cases were made, crafted to offer collectors an accessible entry point into one of the most pedigreed brands in the valley. And the wine? It’s absolutely stunning!
The 2023 Castiel Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley captures everything we love about the vintage — purity, energy, and effortless depth. Aromas of dark cherry compote, lilac, and roasted cocoa lead into a layered palate of blackberry, cassis, graphite, and cedar, framed by fine, mountain-driven tannins that balance plushness with lift. A quick decant reveals its youthful generosity, but this beauty will easily age for 25+ years.
It’s rare to see a wine of this pedigree positioned at $100, especially from such esteemed vineyard sources and winemaking talent; the kind of wine that makes seasoned collectors stop and say, “Wait… this is how much?” With both Celia’s legacy and Maayan’s precision woven into its DNA, it’s a bottle that bridges generations of Napa greatness.
