For Aaron Michaelis, the memory of tall prairie grasses and endless horizons in the Flint Hills of Kansas shaped more than his childhood—it shaped his approach to wine. Those early years instilled a reverence for the land and the practice of giving back to it. In 2013, Aaron left the prairie behind, letting his fascination with fine wine chart a course west to Napa Valley. After years of navigating sales, marketing, and product development with boutique wineries, he realized that the calling he could no longer ignore was crafting his own artisanal wines. In 2016, Flint Knoll was born.
Aaron’s vision is amplified by the extraordinary talents of Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky, whose pedigrees include Château Haut Brion, Dominus, Petrus, Screaming Eagle, and Dalla Valle. Together, they create small-production, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon that speaks directly of Napa’s most celebrated terroirs, marrying power and elegance in every bottle.
The 2023 Flint Knoll Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Andrew Geoffrey Vineyard on Diamond Mountain. The vineyard is perched at nearly 2,000 feet, an elevation so high that the vineyard usually receives a light dusting of snow every winter. The soils here are so rich in volcanic ash, tufa, and rhyolite that if you were to walk these vineyard rows, your boots would be covered in chalk-white dust. Peter, the owner of the vineyard, was also one of the core vintners who helped to establish the Diamond Mountain District as a designated AVA back in 2001. With only 13 planted acres, it is a well-kept secret at the top of the hill. If there’s one thing we know, most often the best finds—and the most compelling wines—require a bit of off-roading.
The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a lifted bouquet where California lilacs and graphite mingle with ripe blackberry and cassis, capturing the floral-mineral nuances unique to Diamond Mountain. On the palate, it is powerful yet tension-driven, balancing concentrated dark fruit with bright acidity and finely polished tannins, leading to a seamless, plush finish. This is a Cabernet that speaks of its rocky slopes and careful hands, offering layered intensity and elegance with every sip.
