If you love the timeless, site-driven ethos of Hayfork—one of ACME’s all-time favorite boutique Napa producers—the wines from Taplin Cellars will feel instantly familiar. Same old-school Napa soul. Same reverence for land. Same belief that great wine is grown, not engineered. And a multi-generation family bond that connects the two estates.

The wines from Taplin Cellars are far from new to us. ACME sold the Terra 9 back when their debut 2009 vintage was first released, and we've remained closely connected to the family and the wines ever since. While we love discovering and championing new producers, there's something deeply satisfying about returning to a classic,?especially one that continues to deliver on quality and price point year after year

The Taplin story in Napa begins long before Cabernet was king. John Orange Taplin, a Vermont dairyman, arrived during the Gold Rush and by 1866 had established a dairy along what is now the Silverado Trail—near the road that still bears his name, Taplin Road. Long before tasting rooms and cult labels, the Taplins were learning this land from the ground up. That intimacy with site lives on in Terra 9, named for the family’s early assessment of the vineyard: “nine parts rock and one part dirt”—ideal for wine grapes. That rocky foundation still defines the wine today, lending a signature minerality that quietly anchors all the richness around it.

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 22 months in 60% new French oak, and guided by winemaker Julien Fayard—whose résumé spans Lafite Rothschild, Smith Haut Lafitte, and years as Philippe Melka’s director of winemaking—this is Napa Cabernet with French restraint and deep respect for terroir.

In the glass, the 2021 Terra 9 is a sun-kissed, beautifully complete Cabernet. Aromatics of black cherry, bay leaf, cedar, and dried savory lead the way, followed by darker tones of blackberry compote and river stone. The palate is broad and luxurious—ripe black fruit, espresso, golden caramel, and the blackest of black cherries—yet never heavy, with that rocky minerality humming beneath it all. Sweet baking spice carries through a long, polished finish of ripe raspberry, boysenberry pie, and a whisper of mint tea.
